The new Savage Gear Savage SGY 2X treble hooks - another new gear post, apologies, but these hooks are really good
As with the new colours of the Sandeel Pencil SW lures I blogged about on Wednesday, I have been itching to tell you about these new Savage Gear Savage SGY 2X treble hooks for a long time now. I accept that treble hooks are hardly the most exciting things in fishing, but most of us here use them for at least some of the time, and bad quality hooks don’t tend to get us very far for obvious reasons. You know that I don’t obsess about big bass only, but if and when I might hook that fish of a lifetime I want to concentrate on getting it in and not worrying for a single second about any of the bits and pieces. I trust my rods and reels and lines and knots, but we obviously ain’t getting very far with this sport fishing thing if we don’t use good quality hooks……………
This blog post is not going to be a discussion on the merits of treble versus single hooks by the way. I love fishing, but at the end of the day sport fishing revolves around sticking hooks in the mouths of fish for our enjoyment. There is no getting away from it, so let’s get any debate on trebles and/or singles out of the way and concentrate on these new Savage Gear Savage SGY 2X treble hooks.
Nearly two years ago now when we took so many things for granted that we so wish we could do right now, I flew over to Denmark to meet Mads Grosell from Savage Gear and discuss bass fishing and what we might be able to do together. We talked about a lot of stuff and the new Savage Gear related bass fishing products you are seeing these days are a direct result of that first meeting. Just as I was leaving Mads gave me a couple of lure boxes full of various hard lures - samples, new colours and rigging of existing models, reworked lures, etc. He simply said to please have a play with them and see if any were of interest, and then Mads said that all the lures were rigged with brand new treble hooks that they were just starting to use on new hard lures. We had a quick discussion about some of the previous Savage Gear trebles that I had come across on a few lures in the past, and Mads said that these new trebles were seriously good and I needed to give them some time in saltwater.
So I did, and over an increasing amount of time playing and fishing with some of these lures I began to notice that neither the trebles or the split rings were showing any signs of rust at all - and I mean not a single sign. The treble above is from one of the lures I took away from that first meeting, and whilst I do wash my lures down in freshwater after fishing with them, I have come to accept over the years that many trebles and split rings begin to break down rather faster than I would like. For sure there’s a bit of discoloration on the treble above, but it’s nothing to do with rust, that lure is nearly two years old, it’s been fished with a fair amount, and it’s one of the main lures I use as a kind of test lure on lure rods I am playing around with or testing and evaluating because there might or might not be some rather interesting stuff coming out in June which I can’t quite talk about yet.
Last year I blogged about how the Savage Gear Stainless split rings had kind of crept up on me as being seriously bloody good, and it’s the same with those treble hooks which are now the Savage Gear Savage SGY 2X treble hooks which are available to buy. For a long time now I have been lobbying to get these hooks onto the market, and whilst it’s obviously not only because of me that they are now available to buy separately to the actual lures, I am definitely something to do with it. I have asked numerous times if we can please keep the packets of trebles at a sensible price because I think far too many replacement trebles are far too expensive and I wonder if the price puts a lot of anglers off and sways them towards buying cheaper stuff which often isn’t great. Hooks are bloody important. You should be able to find sizes #2, #4, #5 and #6 in boxes of eight for about £6 here in the UK.
I remember coming across various Savage Gear lures in the past and replacing the mainly freshwater looking trebles because I didn’t like the look of them at all for saltwater fishing, but now I can gladly say that these new Sandeel Pencil SW lures for example come rigged for saltwater use with these seriously good Savage Gear Savage SGY 2X treble hooks - and those hooks can be bought in packets as replacement trebles if anglers need to change hooks on some of their lures.
There are obviously plenty of good treble hooks out there, but the problem I have always found is that when I find replacement trebles I end up really liking after a lot of fishing time with them, when it comes to buying some more I often can’t then find them for sale in the UK again. This has happened a number of times and it doesn’t fit with how my brain works and how I like to stick with certain components that I really trust. Another thing I do like about these particular treble hooks is that I have never found any of those little rust spots which can appear on many trebles over time when you crush the barbs flat like I always, always do. If I had my way then these new Savage Gear Savage SGY 2X treble hooks would have been released as barbless only, but that was not going to happen for a number of reasons. Never say never and I will keep pushing, but there is a strong sense of reluctance out there.
Anyway, so there you go - the new Savage Gear Savage SGY 2X treble hooks, available in the UK right now. These have been THE replacement trebles I have been using for a fair while now, and I really, really like them. I am hoping that you trust me here because me trying to push treble hooks at you which I hadn’t fished with for a proper length of time and landed numerous fish on would not be right on so many levels, not least the fact that for all my working in fishing, I have always and will always be an obsessed angler first and foremost - and I rather like the best possible chance of landing any fish I might go and hook. If you ever see me out and about on the coast you will find that any of my hard lures which have required their treble hooks and/or split rings to be changed will be rigged with these Savage Gear Savage SGY 2X treble hooks and the Savage Gear Stainless split rings. I can’t really do much more than actually go out fishing myself with the gear I talk about on here. You all stay safe and well please, have a good weekend, roll on no sodding frosts in the morning anymore please……………….
