Sorry for no blog posts last week, I was having a magical week in the Isles of Scilly with my family

Talk about lucking out! For various covid related reasons we very nearly didn’t get out to the Isles of Scilly - eldest girl, Boardmasters, all her friends testing positive, she isolated from us but we had to wait until the last moment for a second negative PCR test etc. - but we did, and if you were in the south west last week then you will know how amazing the weather was. Blue sky days, light winds, warm, does it really get much better than that?

If you have never been to the Isles of Scilly then I would urge you to get yourself out there. As a place for a holiday it’s magical whatever the weather, and there’s obviously stacks of wrasse, pollack and mullet fishing especially. If you see another angler anywhere you can consider yourself unlucky, and if you are happy to walk and know a bit about where you are going then it’s very easy to find quiet beaches and stretches of coastline if you like it nice and quiet like we all do. It was my mate Del who is a Scillonian born and bred who introduced me to the Isles of Scilly when we did some filming work many years ago, and my wife and I and then our two girls when they came along have been going back ever since. Plus Jess back in the day and now Storm - it’s a great place for dogs. Recent global events have obviously stopped us all from doing what we want to do, but on Tuesday morning last week we boarded the boat from Penzance and off we went.

We tend to do a mix of visiting some of the off-islands and spending time on the main island of St.Mary’s where we stay. Last week we walked around/spent various days on the beaches of St.Mary’s, St.Martin’s, Bryher, and my wife and girls also went to Tresco one day while I stayed on St.Mary’s and went fishing. What we tend to do is walk around the various islands with the dog, grab some lunch somewhere, and then find a lovely bit of beach which isn’t exactly very hard to do out there if you don’t mind walking and the weather is as amazing as it was last week. My youngest girl then took it upon herself to take the dog off for a run around the coast paths of some of the islands while we were on the various beaches, and she managed St.Mary’s, St.Martin’s and Bryher plus a few more shorter runs on St.Mary’s. Her idea of a holiday is asking us if she can run a bit more than she normally does already! One of the reasons we have a sheepdog is because we literally need a breed of dog which can take a huge amount of exercise - walking, running with both girls, and of course fishing.

Anyway, we’re back home, the weather is still stunning, I am guessing that later on this week Cornwall will get a fair bit quieter as the schools start going back, and can you really believe that we are about to move into autumn already? This is my favourite time of year for bass fishing coming up, if all stays as it is I will be out in Ireland sometime soon, I hope you’re all doing well and managing to enjoy a bit of this beautiful weather wherever you may be………….
