Interesting bit of weather for our third group’s first day with us
The weather on what we call the changeover day between our second and third group of anglers was a bit wild, but the lads got here safely and we all had supper together on Saturday evening. John and I had both taken a good look around at various times during Saturday to keep an eye on local conditions, so plans were made to meet for a quick cup of tea at 5am on Sunday morning and then get out there………….
The lads have fished with us before and anybody who likes lure fishing for bass especially knows all about weather and conditions. It rained a little bit yesterday to put it mildly, but the lads fished their socks off and we had a lot of fun. I couldn’t photograph a 6lb+ pollack which came on the white coloured 12.5cm/28g Savage Minnow Weedless because there was no way to keep the rain off the lens, and a few minutes later another of the lads got absolutely smoked by what looked like a seriously good pollack doing its thing of diving right under the nearest ledge just when you think you have won! Same lure as well which from my point of view is interesting because white doesn’t tend to be a go-to colour for me when targeting pollack which we did for a quick session after lunch.
A couple of bass were landed and a couple were dropped when we found some beautifully clear and green water in an area that I defy any bass anglers not to quite literally drool over. It’s actually a somewhat daunting place to fish because there is so much variety of ground condensed into a relatively small area, and in a perfect world you want to be attacking it in about twenty different ways. I would love to spend a week or two exploring literally this area only because I think the potential around there is something else. Again I couldn’t photograph the bass because of the rain.
A couple of the lads are fishing with and absolutely loving the Van Staal VR50 spinning reels which in turn makes me disappointed with myself all over again that when I bought one I couldn’t stop getting the odd wind-knot when I was casting soft plastics especially. The simple fact is that it had to have been me and how I sometimes cast soft plastics especially, because I know too many anglers who love these tough as hell and fully sealed little spinning reels. I am more than happy with the similar size but heavier Penn Slammer IV 2500 and Penn Authority 2500 reels, but something in me still desires a VR50 because I am a hopeless tackle tart.
Anyway, we will be back on it this morning. Not quite sure what we’re going to find out there because wow did it blow last night, but it’s October and you have to expect any kind of weather of course. The beauty about this part of the world is that there is always some kind of viable option with clear water and decent conditions. The photos here are from yesterday morning before the rain came in and when the light went absolutely loopy for about ten minutes. Kerry never ceases to amaze me and to be able to come here and do this work with John and Lynn is something I never take for granted. I love it whatever the weather does………
