Fascinates me how pink lures seem to work so well in deeper water, wouldn’t it be amazing to know what the fish are actually seeing?

I accept that when you are fishing on your own you can’t exactly compare and contrast to other anglers and the different lures or lure colours they might be using, but over the last couple of days I have caught a bunch of bass from the deepest water I personally fish for these fine fish - and yet again a pink lure has been doing the damage. So because I was on my own I can’t with any real conviction say to you that pink is THE colour for deeper water, but what I do know is that I have seen it work well enough times now - with other anglers around and when on my own - to firmly believe that there is something about a pink lure in deeper water……………..

And judging by some comments on my Facebook page, there are some bass anglers out there who also swear by pink lures in all manner of different depths and water conditions, as well as at night. I guess we will never know what the fish are actually seeing, but a friend of mine said something interesting when he noted how “pink “mattes” out at depth and is a really strong blocked out greyish tone that contrasts the surroundings”. I hadn’t thought of it like that before, but it makes a lot of sense, but bearing in mind of course that we are looking at the colour with our human eyes.

So I have been mainly bumping the bottom in some deeper water with a lure I happen to trust implicitly on a mark like this, the Savage Gear Sandeel V2 Weedless. I chop and change between the 11.5cm/22g and the 13cm/33g depending on the current and/or depth, but when it comes to getting down hard on the bottom and bouncing a lure around, I do like the Sandeel V2 Weedless and how the rather interesting jig head design works so well with either bumping or swimming the lure. Watch closely on a medium sort of speed straight retrieve and it’s remarkable how much roll there is to the body of the lure. I do like a bit of roll.

Again, if you were to fish this spot it might well be a different lure for you, but because the Sandeel V2 Weedless has worked so well for me before I naturally turn to it first off. I would guess that most of us do this. We rock up at a mark and the first lure we clip on is something which has worked for us before at the same mark. I can’t really remember why pink has become such a go-to colour in deeper water especially, because I have caught plenty of bass on different colours of this specific lure. But for some reason pink often has the edge, and especially when there is a tinge to the water which you either get on the bigger tides or when there has been a good bit of rain. I also really like chartreuse (bright yellow) and also white, but the first colour I am going to turn to is pink in a situation like this, and what is now needed is for some proper water time with say a pink Gravity Stick Paddletail when I might more usually turn to white. You know as well as I do how much of this is to with our confidence, and I feel very confident clipping on a pink lure when I target somewhat deeper water especially. You all have a good weekend and roll on England v New Zealand on Saturday. Yep, I dare to dream once again……………..
