Black Friday 15% off everything at Veals Mail Order until midnight tonight, use the code BF15 at checkout, here are a few rather nice bargains
Shoot the messenger if you would prefer, but I am always completely open and honest about any affiliate links I might use on this blog and website. I am hugely grateful to those of you who kindly choose to buy something via one of my affiliate links. It’s never going to cost you anymore to do so, and of course it’s perfectly understandable that a lot of you prefer to buy your fishing tackle elsewhere (support local whenever you can, you know it makes sense), but literally anything which is bought via any of my affiliate links helps me keep this blog going. Time, software packages, website hosting, subscriber lists and emails, buying the odd bit of fishing tackle specifically to use and review on here, you name it, anything which helps lessen these costs helps me out. My profound thank you as always, and because it’s Black Friday and Veals Mail Order who I affiliate link with are doing a blanket 15% off anything on their website until midnight tonight (use the code BF15 at checkout), here are what I think are some of the highlights……………….
Savage Gear SGS5 10’ 18-56g lure rod - the peach that is the 10’ 12-46g is currently out of stock at Veals Mail Order (review here), but the slightly more powerful and just as easy to use 18-56g version is in stock, and with 15% off today the price is a complete joke at £110.50.
Savage Gear SGS5 9’6’’ 9-35g - my go-to surf rod for those sessions when I can get away with not needing to go above the 35g Surf Seeker, and today only this rod is also £110.50.
Penn Authority 2500 and 3500 - never going to be cheap spinning reels, but as much as I love the cheaper Penn Slammer IV 2500 (£161.50 today), the Penn Authority reels are a noticeable step up in smoothness and refinement (review here). So they bloody should be for the price of course, but today the Authority 2500 is £365.50 and the Authority 3500 is £391.00.
Sufix 131 - still THE best braid I have ever fished with. As much as I seriously like the much cheaper Berkley Sick X8 and newish Sufix 91 braids - both somewhat cheaper today - I can’t get away from how perfect Sufix 131 is. Today it’s still not cheap at £39.10 for a 150m spool, but with how long it lasts and how perfectly it works, personally I think it’s worth every penny - and I don’t really care whether I use the 20lb, 25lb, 28lb or even 30lb with how thin they feel and how well they cut through the wind. If it’s out of stock it’s because I got in there before you and bought the lot!
Daiwa BG-MQ spinning reels - I did an initial impressions post of the 4000D-XH version back in June, and to be honest I think it’s easily up there with the outstanding Shimano Vanford spinning reels (cheaper today!). Today this Daiwa BG MQ 4000D-XH is a complete steal at £174.25. What I really want to see next is the slightly smaller 3000D-XH version and today that is also £174.25. Help!
Penn Conflict Elite lure rods - reviews of many of them here. One of the most interesting and complete ranges of modern bass lure fishing rods I have fished with, hugely impressive, and whilst they are not budget rods, today they are a good bit cheaper with the 15% off. I still reckon the 9’ 7-38g is my favourite, and today it’s going for £272. With how good it is, that's a hell of a lot of rod for the money.
ABU Superior 3000SH spinning reel - review here, and today it’s almost silly at £76.50. I know I ruined the larger 4000SH the other day, but it was my fault and I really want another one. That model is also £76.50 today.
RBB Surf Supporter II lure bag - review here, I like this way of carrying lures and pliers and fish grip etc. when I am surf fishing especially. Not a cheap bit of kit, but it’s much more palatable at £80.75 today. That wide belt is ideal for tightening up around your waterproof top to help prevent cold water getting in and underneath and then into your waders!
Nitecore NU25 headlamp, 2022 version - easily the best headlamp for lure fishing at night that I know of, review here, and although this upgraded 2022 version saw a bit of a price rise, today it’s £41.64. These things just keep on working and working. Mine always lives in my rucksack.
Talking about waterproof rucksacks, I am still using and loving the Savage Gear WP Rollup Rucksack 40L. Review here, I am on my second one now, and today it’s a very accessible £56.10. I am still hoping that I get to work on a second generation of this waterproof rucksack, but for now I think it’s pretty damn good.
Those very lovely and incredibly light Major Craft Tidrift 8’6’’ 862L/ML 5-30g, 9’6’’ 962ML 7-35g, and 9’6’’ 962M 10-45g lure rods are available for £255 today (review here). I don’t know how much these rods get with the limited edition SeaBass custom rods grabbing most of the Major Craft headlines, but these Tidrift rods are serious bits of kit.
I have no idea about any of the Savage Gear sales figures, but I do feel that their SGS6 lure rods tend to fly under the radar here in the UK. It’s a huge range of rods and many of them aren’t that applicable to us, but I have a big soft spot for the lovely SGS6 9’ 7-35g rod (£178.50 today, review here) and a very, very serious soft spot for the truly outstanding and annoyingly out of stock today SGS6 8’3’’ 12-42g rod.
By the way, I have just got hold of a rather clever little hook sharpener contraption from Veals that does an amazing job of putting properly sharp points back on a number of different weedless and treble hooks I have been trying out on it. Called the Smith's Diamond Retractable Sharpener, I have no idea how long the pen-style holder thing will last around saltwater, but the actual (and apparently unbreakable) diamond coated steel rod bit is SO good for hooks and knives. I found a really quite blunt 6/0 weedless hook here at home and I managed to put a wicked point back on it. This is going straight into my rucksack and I will report back in due course. Today this hook sharpener is £10.20.
I am not going to go through all the different lures and accessories I might use for my shore based fishing, not when they are all described in detail on the Fishing Tackle page on this very website. Any that are in stock at Veals Mail Order have a healthy 15% off them for today only. You all have a good weekend and please don’t blame me if you show lure fishing tackle related weaknesses like me today! I try as hard as I can to convince myself that it’s all for work related “research”, but how many Hound Glides does one angler need for example? It’s not grown up and it’s not remotely mature, but once you’re 50+ I reckon it’s okay to keep regressing……………..
Disclosure - If you buy anything using links found around my website, I may make a commission. It doesn’t cost you anymore to buy via these affiliate links - and please feel entirely free not to do so of course - but it will help me to continue producing content. Thank you.
