BKK Titan Rider and Titan Diver weedless hooks review - not particularly cheap, but they are rather good
Yep, another thing I tend to obsess about - weedless hooks! If all hooks were the same quality and design then life would be a bit more boring but potentially a little simpler as well. I am a huge fan of “our” 4/0 and 6/0 weedless corkscrew hooks we did for the Savage Gear Gravity Stick soft plastics, and of course these hooks will work very well with plenty of other soft plastics that aren’t the Gravity Sticks. It would be remiss of me not to fish with and try other gear though, and from the first time I saw these slightly strange shaped BKK Titan Rider weedless hooks a good few years ago now I have really liked them………….
I like how BKK have gone outside of the normal box with their design of these BKK Titan Rider hooks, and the “Super Slide coating of the hook enhances penetration capability and reduces friction to the minimum level”. I do like how these hooks resist rusting very well and also how they literally slide through soft plastic lures very easily. Which in turn to me means that when a fish hits your lure there is very little impediment from the lure moving out of the way to allow the point of the hook to bang home. The eye of these hooks is big enough to allow for a corkscrew/hitch hiker as well as the sort of paperclip-style lure clip I use. The points are razor sharp and keep their points well, and the design of these hooks makes for easy sharpening if required (I will ask again, how many of you regularly check your hookpoints and then sharpen them up if required?).
Okay, so these non belly-weight BKK Titan Rider weedless hooks are not the cheapest you can find - £6.99 for 3 x 5/0 or 4 x 4/0 etc. - but with how few weedless hooks I actually lose I can live with that to get such a good quality hook on the end of my line. These BKK Titan Rider hooks are what I would call “big” hooks, as in the deeper/wider design and size of them means that I am perfectly happy to use say a 5/0 Titan Rider as an equivalent for say the 6/0 Savage Gear weedless corkscrew hook. And so on, 4/0 for a 3/0 etc. I like the little soft-touch sleeve on the hook which definitely helps keep your soft plastic flush in place for repeated casting. I think the BKK Titan Riders are awesome weedless hooks.
So now we come to the belly-weighted version, the BKK Titan Diver weedless hooks. Same design as the Rider but with a belly-weight and also a spinning blade attached to a little clip on the bottom of the weight - which I remove. I see no reason why these blades would not add a bit of attraction to the setup, but I feel just fine unclipping them from the belly-weight. Anything to try and snag less weed or add any more wind resistance etc. As above I love the design of these hooks, but I’d like the option of some heavier weights for certain situations. I could always wrap some wire around the hook to add more weight, but you get my drift. These belly-weight Titan Diver hooks as they come work really well, but you know how much I am a fan of options. I am not in a position to complain when our own Savage Gear belly-weighted weedless hooks only come with a 2g weight on the 4/0 and a 3g weight on the 6/0, but it’s not for a lack of pushing my end to try and get more options! And to be fair, the more I fish with really good weedless jig heads like those Decoy Violence VJ-36 ones, the more comfortable I am with turning over to them if I need a heavier weight.
One thing I don’t particularly love about both these hooks is the actual corkscrew or hitch hiker that are come secured to the eye of the hook in the packet. The bit that you screw into the nose of your soft plastic to secure it to the actual hook, call it whatever you will. There is nothing wrong with these specific corkscrews I might add, rather that once you have used a corkscrew with a centering pin, I don’t like going back to one without if that makes sense. You will notice that our Savage Gear weedless corkscrew hooks come with corkscrews which use that centering pin design - I first saw this design on some Owner weedless hooks I think it was. You can’t buy these Savage Gear corkscrews separately though, so I buy these (centering pin design) Seadra corkscrews here and use them on these BKK Titan Rider and Titan Diver hooks. A bit pernickety perhaps, but I know what I like.
As I said earlier on, you can find cheaper weedless hooks out there, but I like these things. I have never seen a hint of these BKK hooks starting to bend out on any of the bass I have hooked and pulled hard on them, and if you need particularly large weedless hooks then the non belly-weight Titan Riders go up to a massive 18/0 size! I guess you would have to buy the much bigger sizes direct from the US perhaps, because the largest size I tend to see here in the UK is about a 5/0 - which is just fine for me and my bass fishing.
