A couple of days with the main man at Savage Gear and my brain is fried, and Seekers are trickling back into the UK
Holy cow I need some sleep. I used to think that when I grew up I would get control of my head and I would not be a middle aged father of two who still gets so ridiculously excited and motivated by all things fishing - but happily for me this never happened. I might be nearly 47, but the day that the sort of thing I have been doing over in Denmark stops wrecking my head and causing me serious sleep issues is the day I walk away from working in fishing. I have just spent a couple of days with the main bloke behind the Savage Gear brand (Mads Grosell) over in Denmark, and I am absolutely bouncing………….
In a while I can start telling you about the first bass fishing related project that Mads and I started working on together last year, and over in Denmark I got to play with the next round of samples. Crumbs. In no way am I any kind of bass fishing expert (my least favourite word in fishing) and I would never in a million years claim to be any kind of lure designer either - but I do have a lot of ideas and thoughts and opinions, and when I then get the chance to work closely with somebody like Mads who so quickly understands exactly what I am on about, well from my side that’s when things get so exciting and motivational. I so loved doing what I did with the wonderful people over at Fiiish in France, but for various reasons I was never going to get the chance to work within and around the actual product development. It wasn’t what they brought me in to do, but at the end of the day I suppose I couldn’t ignore so badly wanting to get involved in the development of bass fishing tackle - hence me ending up doing this work with Savage Gear and this human dynamo of lure fishing tackle that is Mads Grosell.
So yes I am doing paid work with Savage Gear because as I pointed out on Facebook yesterday, a few free bits and pieces of fishing tackle has never and will never pay any bills. And no, I am not about to start fishing only with Savage Gear fishing tackle for my bass fishing, indeed I couldn’t even if I wanted to, which I don’t by the way. Savage Gear don’t yet make enough bass fishing gear but of course I am hoping in time that we do end up making more and more of the sort of lure gear that I and hopefully some of you here want to fish with because it works well. I hope that you trust in me that I am always honest with what I do and don’t do. We’re talking about the European sea bass fishing market in the UK and Ireland here, because it ain’t something massive like the US freshwater bass scene where you see all these logoed up “pro anglers” wandering around the shows and who are in many respects paid to fish and also promote their sponsors. Believe me or don’t believe me, but I can guarantee you there there isn’t a fishing tackle company out there which is going to pay somebody like me to do no more than say nice things about their bass fishing tackle - our market can’t support this sort of flippancy, let alone the fact that it’s not right anyway. I will end up talking more about Savage Gear fishing tackle because I can now get hold of it more easily to play with and report back, plus the the fact that Mads and I are doing a load of work together to bring more bass lure related gear to our market. I am hugely excited about all this and this blog is where I will keep you updated.
And in a roundabout way it was me coming across the Savage Gear Seeker for some of bass fishing a few years ago that has ended up with me doing some work with the company. It seemed that the moment I came across the lure and started catching bass on it then the 28g and 32g versions were no longer available, so I stepped into action. I have known the UK head of the parent company Svendsen Sport for many years now and I got in touch to say a big fat pretty please could we have the 28g and 32g Seekers back on the market. Now things are never going to happen overnight but I have a suspicion that the grownups within Svendsen and Savage Gear started to notice that more anglers were asking for these lures, and I was going to get back from my Denmark meeting earlier this week to tell you that I have had official confirmation that the 28g and 32g Savage Gear Seekers will be available again in the UK from 1st April this year………………
That may well be the official timescale, but I got back to the UK to find a couple of emails from people I know within the trade to say that 28g and 32g Seekers were already starting to trickle into shops and onto websites here in the UK and Ireland. As per above I might or might not have a sneaky little stock here at home that I managed to get my grubby mitts on, but if you are after these metal lures then you can find some here, or keep a close eye on local tackle shops and various tackle websites. There are of course any number of other metal lures out there that work well for our bass, but after fishing with a lot of different metals in the surf especially I have found that for me the Seeker gives me exactly what I am looking for. I might well be doing some work now with Savage Gear, but please go back through my blog and you will see that I have been banging on about these lures way before I ever became involved with Savage Gear in an official capacity. You all have a good weekend and if you see me driving around in my Savage Gear sponsored Rolls Royce then please give me a wave.
