Very cool to see some keen youngsters fishing so well

I am pretty damn sure that I didn’t have anywhere near the skill of these kids I met last week when I was their age. I met up with some good people last week to do a bit of fishing and see some fishing tackle, and whilst the emphasis was not going to be on catching loads of fish with the extremely bright and clear conditions we had, one of the lads landed a couple of bass so I’m taking it as a win! I was also left with a very, very interesting lure rod to play with for the lighter side of bass fishing especially, indeed I am already plotting how it might never go back from whence it came. MTC.

The old git on the left!

I have worked in fishing for a long time now and I consider myself very fortunate to know a number of really good people. I won’t embarrass the bloke by naming him here, but the guy who organised last week’s get together is one of the true good guys in fishing. There is every chance you have used at least an item of fishing tackle that he imports and distributes, but above all that work stuff is how he does loads to give back to the sport. I respect the hell out of him and it was an honour to spend a day with the people he brought down to Cornwall last week.

We messed around for a while on an estuary mark, then I took them to a beach where there was a decent bit of swell rolling in. I had to think of a number of different things when choosing somewhere to fish, not least the whole safety angle, so I was rather pleased to hear over the radio that young Henry above caught and landed this rather lovely bass not long after we got down there. Lydia below is in her first year of A-Levels and this summer she is off to the US to represent England for fly fishing. How awesome is that? Fishing doesn’t need more people like me, it badly needs a strong younger element to keep things moving forward in a good way. Put fishing in the hands of youngsters like these and I would feel very positive about the future……………….
