Tried and failed to catch a bass before Storm Goretti came in, hope you’re all okay
With thanks to David Trickey of Labrax Mafia for kindly shooting a few photos of me fishing in some really horrible weather yesterday! I might well have missed most of the cold snap that most of you have been suffering over Xmas - oh how I would love to be back in Kenya right now! - but there was no missing what came in last night here in Cornwall. It’s still dark as I am writing this blog post this morning so I will get a look at any potential damage outside and around the house when it gets light in a while. I hope you are all okay, I was reading about gusts to 123mph around the Padstow area from Storm Goretti…………..
We found some rather nice open coast bass fishing conditions on the ebb tide yesterday, but apart from what felt like a sharp “bang” on one retrieve, there were no bass landed. It was peeing it down when I left home and the rain only got worse. Another good test for the Grundens waders and jacket which are performing so well for me, but towards the end of the session I was once again struggling to feel the tips of a few fingers. I have a fairly good glove/protection system sorted out now for the colder weather now, but I have had to accept that post-heart attack with the various drugs I am on, my hands and finger tips especially get colder far easier than they ever used to.
It was only a few days ago when at times it felt almost too hot out in Kenya when the sun got high in the sky. Contrast that to being trussed up like a Christmas turkey to go fishing yesterday and I couldn’t help but grin at the difference. I gave it a good go and it would have been great to catch a January bass or two, but getting out fishing again felt pretty damn good on its own. I am obviously looking forward to spring as much as any of you here, but there’s plenty of bass fishing stuff I want to do and try out over the next few (colder) months.
My youngest girl left Heathrow yesterday morning and I woke up early here in Cornwall to find a WhatsApp that she had got to her hotel in San Francisco where she is staying for a couple of days before flying on to New Zealand. She’s going to head out for a run across the Golden Gate Bridge which will be somewhat different to me heading out around Torpoint for my own (slow) run when it gets light here in Cornwall. Hope you’re all okay after those serious winds last night, I don’t like a NW storm at all around here, it usually brings a few trees down and we tend to lose a few roof tiles and so on. Let’s see if anything has happened when it gets light………
