They work! I do get such a kick out of catching bass on a lure or technique I haven’t fished with before
If you kindly took the time to read Wednesday’s blog post then you will know about a soft plastic lure I have been meaning to properly try for bass. I wrote that blog post on Wednesday morning after a bunch of tests in hospital the day before, and I had no intention of fishing yesterday because I was stuck here with work. You know how it is though! An itch had begun to rear its head in my fishing junkie brain, and it revolved around this sudden change from summer to autumn and a lot of west and north west winds down here…………..
So I had to give the itch a bit of a scratch. If I had been planning to go fishing I thought my local coastline would be too big, and the north coast webcams were looking pretty damn hectic. I was being a good boy and getting on with some work, but the estuary-based itch kept itching away. So I gave and hit the road. I really wanted to see if where I was thinking about would be fishable on strongish westerly winds, and also whether there might be a few bass about. Can I call it work if I demand of myself that I give that Savage Gear Dragon Tail Slug soft plastic a proper go? Product research and testing and all that.
And lo and frigging behold if firstly the place I had been thinking about didn’t look more than fishable in some testy conditions, and secondly I went and missed a solid hit on about my third cast with the lure. I had cheb rigged it on a Berkley Fusion 7g cheb weight and one of these rather interesting Eagle Claw Trokkar Magworm TK125 3/0 weedless hooks which has a really good “keeper” system that holds these TPE soft plastics in place so well. It looked like the right sort of area to try a creature bait, but I wanted to see how this 10cm Savage Gear Dragon Tail Slug would react when fished in a similar way. I also fancy these things being twitched about on a lighter cheb weight perhaps.

A while later and I got one of those unmissable whacks and bass on. I guessed the fish at about 3.5lbs, but I wasn’t bothered about the size or the length because I was way more interested in the catching of a bass at a new mark in tricky conditions, and on a new (to me) lure. It’s very early days of course, but I needed that jolt of confidence to persist with the lure - and I got it. Now I can relax and see how the lure performs in different situations and on different setups. Help! You all have a good weekend…………
