Our anglers are enjoying some glorious bass fishing out here in Kerry
It’s great to see bass fishing when it’s firing, and when you combine it with being in such a special part of the world, well that’s about as good as it gets for me. I am not fishing of course, but watching good numbers of quality bass coming in for our anglers is more than enough to satisfy the fishing junkie in me……………
It’s not every day that you get to witness proper bass smashing bait off the top, but thanks to a very good call by John Quinlan, that is what we found the other day. We rocked up to find big swirls on the surface, with what looked like some properly big bass way out back almost coming clean out of the water at times. There is obviously a part of me that initially thinks wow, I need to get in on it myself, but you are so wrapped up in the excitement of other anglers catching good bass and all the associated banter that it’s honestly as much fun to be around it and helping people get involved. I’d rather be doing this type of work than not, and to do it requires that we don’t fish.
Our anglers have caught some good bass on a load of different lures and techniques, but it was fun from my point of view to be able to bring a few of the new colours of Savage Gear Seekers and Surf Seekers (Green Mackerel, Pearl Silver, Silver/Black Mullet) and then see them getting smashed by numbers of fish. I am not saying that the new colours produced more bass, but it’s always fun when something a bit different works so well.
We are very lucky to get a lot of repeat anglers who come and fish with us year after year, and I find it really interesting how they switch onto the different stuff that works so well out here. We are constantly moving around and fishing different kinds of water, and whilst John and I obviously carry a good selection of lures plus spare rods and reels etc., our anglers tend to come fully kitted out with gear they have adapted and refined over the years. At one point yesterday that all time classic hard lure - the IMA Hound 125F Glide - was working well in the water conditions we found, and our anglers were carrying them for example.
I did get shown up at one point yesterday, but I never claim to be an expert and we did have a bloody good giggle about it. At one point, one of our anglers asked me if it would be worth switching over to the Savage Gear Sandeel Pencil 125, a lure which I seriously love - but I just didn’t quite fancy it in the particular conditions we were fishing. So I said nope, let’s stick with the Seeker for the time being, but then another of our anglers went and hooked up right next to me. I asked him what lure he was using, and as you can guess it was the Sandeel Pencil 125! He is a complete wizard with this lure which kinda helps, so I turned to the first angler and said something along the lines of “er, I knew the Sandeel Pencil would work in these conditions, let’s change!” Tongue firmly in cheek of course. As serious as we are about trying to find the best fishing for our anglers, if we don’t collectively have a bloody good time and laugh loads then what’s the point?
