It makes me so happy when this kind of thing happens in fishing
There are so many things in fishing which really make me happy, but some stuff gives me an extra bit of buzz on top of how much fishing buzzes me up already! A friend of mine who seriously loves his bass fishing was asking me some questions about these creature baits - he calls them “happy lobsters” which I really like! - so I said why not come out fishing with me and I can at least show him what I am doing. You know that I am no expert at this stuff, but I am learning all the time and helping a friend out is the least I can do………….
We had a howling east wind and I had to take a punt on a location I know for walking and family picnics, but I don’t really know for bass fishing. The main aim though was to show this lad what I am currently doing with these lures so he could then take it to some of the ground he fishes and knows. I explained a bit about how I rig these lures up - check my blog post from a couple of days ago (10% off everything at Veals Mail Order this Bank Holiday weekend, use the code SUMMER10 at checkout) and how I got about fishing them over the sort of ground he was going to end up using them.
The lad in this blog post fishing a few years ago
I was also able to give this friend a few creature baits, hooks and cheb weights so that he could at least have a crack before committing to buying a load of stuff himself. I had planned to go fishing myself on Wednesday evening but ended up staying at home to help my wife out who had a small operation on her left arm a few days ago. This lad sent me a message to say he was heading out fishing, and did creature baits work at night? I replied back to say good luck, sorry I couldn’t join him, and that I haven’t yet used creature baits/happy lobsters in the dark but I know a few good anglers who have and who have done very well on them.
I woke up early yesterday morning to take Storm for a walk and then head out for a run, and I saw a message from the night before on my phone. My wife and I had been making plum jam - and no, it’s not a euphemism, we genuinely were making jam, what radical lives we lead in our older age! - and my phone had obviously been on silent and I hadn’t heard my mate’s call coming in.
You know when you see a message alert and you hope that when you open it you are going to hear something exciting? That was me yesterday morning when I saw the WhatsApp alert, and what I got was a very excited night time video from this lad to say that he had gone and landed his first ever bass on a creature bait, and it was in the dark as well. He kindly sent me a photo of the fish and then a still from the video to show the lure right down the gob of the bass. We spoke after my run yesterday morning and I got all the details. This lad’s first bass on a happy lobster went a cracking 65cms, and it hit him so close in amongst a load of bladderwrack. He was seriously bouncing, and to be honest so was I. Frigging made up for the bloke because I know how much the whole thing means to him, and I know he can now fish these lures with full confidence and start really finding out if they do make a difference to his fishing. You all have a good weekend, here’s me hoping that any of you here who head out fishing over the Bank Holiday catch a bunch of fish and have a blast doing so……………..
