I think I need to play around with the weights of my Seekers for different marks

When I was doing those couple of days photography in Ireland with the Favorit lads, Marcin who was fishing with us said something really interesting to me. As I always say, I’d be somewhat daft not to listen to good anglers. I obviously enjoy communicating about fishing, but when you talk with and listen to good anglers, you always pick stuff up and get to thinking about your own fishing………….

I know how much Marcin likes those straight stick/twitchstick style EvoBass Lance soft plastic lures for a lot of his bigger bass especially, but when he radioed to say he had just dropped a big bass, we got to talking about his approach. He was telling me how when an area he wants to cover is further out than he can cover with a lure like the (very long-casting for a soft plastic) EvoBass Lance, he will often clip on the little 16g Savage Gear Seeker and fish it like you might fish a paddletail - whack it out and wind it in, but nothing too hectic. An efficient way to cover a lot of ground is how Marcin put it. Makes a lot of sense.

Then a few more anglers have been leaving comments on some of my Facebook posts recently about how much they use the 23g size Seeker over shallow ground when they need to either reach something further out, or cover a lot of water very efficiently. Notice how different anglers often come to a similar conclusion about different types of lures? I am talking about the Savage Gear Seekers here because they are the long-casting metal lures I know the best and use the most, but of course there are plenty of other metal lures out there that will catch you fish. Forget my working with Savage Gear and Pure Fishing here though, because I do happen to think that the Seeker is doing something very enticing when you wind it in.

Give me a good bit of surf and I will turn to my lure box which contains a bunch of 30g, 35g, and 40g Surf Seekers, and any other lure boxes I might carry for other types of bass fishing will always have a couple of 30g Surf Seekers or 28g regular Seekers in them for those times you might need some serious distance. Feeding birds, a specific rip etc., you know what I mean. But I don’t tend to carry 23g and 16g Seekers that much. I have caught plenty of bass on them but it’s more recent communications which have got me thinking about the weight of the Seeker and how you can gain the ability to really adjust the speed of retrieve over shallower ground especially. It’s a bit of an eye-opener how slowly you can retrieve the 16g and 23g Seekers and still have them swimming really shallow and not snagging up all the time. I liken them a bit to the Sandeel Pencil and how it’s essentially a long range soft plastic. For me it’s food for thought and I do like how I can sneak a good few metals into the one slot in a lure box! You all have a good weekend.
