I know this is a bit spoilt considering we are only just out fishing, but please could we have some proper surf conditions sometime soon? Anglers eh?!
With certain restrictions in place we are allowed out fishing again and from a number of reports I am seeing there seem to be a fair few bass around. The weather has been utterly glorious and I will take it all day long thank you very much, but from a fishing point of view I can’t remember having essentially two months plus of winds out of the east which ain’t great around here - and already I am asking the weather gods to send me some proper surf conditions please! I have done a bit of night fishing which I will tell you about next week, but holy cow am I dreaming of those very early mornings when onshore conditions are rolling in on a big sandy beach. You’re not quite sure how deep to wade out because every few waves might smack you in the face and send some lovely cold water down your front, but the energy and fizz and life in the water is so damn exciting and I can’t wait to get back at it whenever we get some conditions………………..
A sample Seeker doing the business for Gary here last year
I am fascinated to see how it might fish in the surf this year both on the north and south coasts of Cornwall. The bulk (lack?) of my experience in the surf up north was from around the middle of last year but we have done plenty of it here on the south coast over the last few years and I have more historical data in my head to draw upon if that makes sense. I have got so many plans and ideas on different places I want to fish and it’s going to be so interesting to see if I can find different patterns or sizes of fish or very specific locations and rocks and sandbanks and so forth. If there is one thing I enjoy doing in my fishing it’s taking a punt, and as much fun as it was last year when we sometimes had a heap of bass early in the morning - and I so hope this happens again this year - I also get such a kick out of trying somewhere different or messing around with different lures and types of lure to see how they might or might not work. A load of fish on the same lure fished the same way can obviously be a huge amount of fun and I bloody love it, but my head works in strange ways and I have always got questions I love trying to find the answers to.
Savage Gear Sandeel Pencil 125 - how I rig them for surf fishing
And via my work I am doing with Savage Gear, I have a bunch of samples here that are literally singing to me with their desire to be clipped on and blasted out. I started obsessing about the Seeker metal lure way before I ever did anything with Savage Gear, and I caught a load of bass in the surf on some sample Seekers last year - but now I have some new samples and they need some proper time in lovely fizzed up water. I was kind of amazed at how easily bass could latch onto what is a pretty slim-profile lure in the Savage Gear Sandeel Pencil 125 in some hectic conditions on the beaches. You know what issues I have with lures, so can you imagine how interested I am to get this new, bigger Sandeel Pencil 150 (30g) out and into some proper surf conditions? I am too late into surf fishing for bass to have really got into the old Bass Bullet but the right one of them goes out there like a missile - I’d be interested to put this Sandeel Pencil 150 up against them in the casting stakes. On a more powerful lure rod especially when you can really get the most out of a 30g lure, this Sandeel Pencil 150 absolutely frigging flies, and again, whilst this lure is new to the market, I have some further sample here which are crying out for some water time as well.
The bigger Sandeel Pencil 150, rigged with a #4 treble at the rear and a #6 treble in the middle. I am going to put singles on for surf fishing.
Working with people like Savage Gear is hugely exciting and we are working on some very cool bass lure fishing related stuff which I’d love to share with you but I can’t go into details for obvious reasons - holy cow though it messes with my head! You know how much I respect and loved working with Fiiish over in France, but my work with them was never going to be about products and product development, and at the end of the day whilst there are many, many far better bass anglers than me out there, I have a hell of a lot of ideas about bass fishing tackle especially and I am getting the chance now to really get into it all. It’s such a blast to work collaboratively on developing ideas and then samples and then being able to test samples out and see if they work as you had planned, and then be able to feed back more ideas and inevitably come up with modifications and new lure ideas and so on. Anyway, so there you go on a truly glorious Friday morning when I look out of my window and it seems as if the world was perfectly normal. We could go fishing again from Wednesday and already I’m asking for different sea conditions please! You all have a good weekend and please stay as safe and well as possible.
