I know it’s March, but this morning’s blank is going to niggle me for a while

It’s not often that a weather forecast from a week or so out ends up spot on, but ever since I saw the forecast for this morning I had been eyeing up an open coast session and hoping that what they said might happen would actually happen. And it did. I have been checking the forecast every morning as I always do anyway, and each morning it was still suggesting ideal conditions for a location I like to try and fish early on in whatever actually passes for the bass season these days……………

And then a mate caught a couple of bass yesterday evening from where I wanted to fish this morning. What more incentive did I need to sleep really badly because I was so excited, wake up before my 4am alarm went off, grab the dog, whack the gear in the Epic Berlingo, and get on the road. When I saw the sea in the half-light I upped my already fast walking pace to that sort of speed walking pace that looks a bit weird but which makes me feel like I am definitely getting fishing a little quicker.

Every single thing about this morning and what I think I know about this location was spot on - save for it still being March. Water clarity, sea state, swell period, wind direction, tide size, state of tide, building springs, no weed in the water, bass had been caught the previous tide - everything. I was bouncing. I like to think I was moving over the rocks like a slinky, middle-aged otter, but Storm was looking distinctly unimpressed by my hopping from rock to rock as the tide stripped out. I refused to believe there were no bass around.

A few hours later and I decided that either I am actually pretty bloody useless, or else there were no bass around and it wasn’t my fault that I blanked. I know it’s March, but with how many factors I was sure were in my favour, that one is going to niggle me for a while. Did I choose the wrong spot? Did I fish it badly? Who the hell knows, but I did get to have a play with both sizes of the brand new Seadra Paddle Shads from Veals Mail Order. Very early days, but they swim with a different action to my go-to Savage Minnow and Savage Minnow Weedless, and I like the fact that the Seadra ones come as two complete lures in the packet - two lure bodies glued to a two good looking J-hook jig heads. I do enjoy messing around with different lures. You all have a good weekend, see you next week, time to give myself a damn good thrashing…………
