How often do two sessions a single day apart fish remotely the same?

Call it the inquisitive or even stubborn side of me, but after Sunday’s bass fishing which I blogged a couple of days ago, I wanted another crack at it on Monday. The weed issues have been so bad around here for most of the year so far that I can’t pretend being able to fish weed-free wasn’t a factor in our decision to go back to the same place on Monday morning, but far more than this is the simple fact that I don’t know enough about how the place fishes - and I want to understand the mark a bit better………….

Anybody with half a clue about bass fishing would have seen how ideal the conditions were that we had on Sunday, but the forecast was for the wind to swing around offshore which would flatten the sea right off. I fancied that the overcast conditions would work in our favour, the tides were roughly the same as the day before, we were going to fish the same sort of time in relation to the tide cycle, indeed the only really glaring difference was the sea state - from lovely and bouncy with onshore winds on Sunday to pretty calm with a bit of a swirling offshore wind on Monday. I had a feeling in my gut walking down to the mark that it might fish very differently - as per the title of the blog post, have you ever had two sessions a single day apart fish remotely the same? - but you ain’t going to learn a huge amount unless you try a few different variables.

I did hook but drop a bass off the top pretty quickly, but from the off things were much quieter. Mark landed a couple of fish in the end and I heroically managed to land this monster fish above on a 20g 3D Jig Minnow which I am really starting to like and I have asked Savage Gear if I can please see some of the 40g versions as well. Yes there are loads of similar casting jigs out there that I am sure work really well in various situations, but I am working with Savage Gear and I will use their gear when I can and if it works for my fishing. I have had a bunch of bass recently on the 20g size and in locations where I am not sure I’d have really considered fishing with a casting jig unless there had been enough fish around for me to start playing with different lures as I like to do.

It doesn’t matter what fishing tackle we did or didn’t use though, because as ever it seems, no two days are ever the same in fishing, and especially when the wind has completely gone around and the sea states on the two days could not be more different. I wish I had enough knowledge to follow and better understand the bait shoals like I hear so much about from across the pond, but my basic understanding is that the conditions on Sunday were conducive to bringing something in close to shore that a load of bass wanted to feed on, and then that the conditions on Monday didn’t have the same effect. Fishing to me is a long term thing though, and those two sessions have increased my knowledge and given me more potential options for the future…………….
