Hope this might be helpful (Savage Minnow and Sandeel V2 rigging info)
It was the same when I was working with the lovely people at Fiiish over in France, and that’s taking into consideration how clever their Black Minnow “system” is with how with each body size there are the right hooks and heads to all match up together - when there are a number of different colours and heads and hooks and so on, it can sometimes get a bit confusing………….
Some of you here might be aware that we - Savage Gear and me! - have recently launched a fairly big range of Savage Minnows (paddletail + jig head with either a J-hook or a weedless hook) and Sandeel V2 lures (sandeel profile paddletail body + jig head with either a J-hook or a weedless hook). I would never try to shy away from how much the Black Minnow system has influenced how I and let’s be fair a number of companies look at the whole lure body + jig head + hook thing, but via a hell of a lot of fishing time with the Black Minnow especially, I knew that if we were going to do our own system as such that there were a number of things I wanted to do a bit differently.
What I wanted to get at today is that this information that you can see here as screenshots exists, but I am not sure how many anglers ever get to see it. If I continue to get the chance to do more and more work with Savage Gear then there are various things I want to improve upon or modify, but I am also aware that a lure packet can’t simply be covered with loads of information which might in fact detract from the item you are trying to sell. I want to get as much information over about how certain lure components fit together and what bits and pieces an angler might need to buy if they want to replace heads or hooks or bodies. I hope and think that a lot of it is fairly self-explanatory, and especially with the simple way in which all the lures are rigged, but what if this is the first time you are trying a lure like this? The toothpick method which is rather grandly called the Pro Peg Mount is bloody clever but of course there is always the ability to simply glue a body to a jig head if that’s what you want to do.
But - the Savage Minnow, Savage Minnow Weedless, Sandeel V2 and Sandeel V2 Weedless lures which are sold pre-rigged are a mixture of what we believe were the best weights of jig head to go with from day one, with obvious options to increase these choices in the future. What might not be so obvious is that there are already some other options with the J-hook Sandeel V2 lures and their jig heads which follow on from the previous generation of this killer lure. What I tend to wonder about is whether many anglers are aware that there are two weights of jig head available for each body size (Tail) if you go and buy the components separately which of course you can actually do. The heavier jig heads then turn these already efficient lures into missiles if you need to cover more water, or faster sinking lures if you need to get down deeper or deal with fast currents and so on. Look at the screenshot above and you will see what I mean.
The 12cm (9.5cm Tail) Sandeel V2 (J-hook) is sold pre-rigged with a 3/0, 15g jig head, for a total weight of 22g - but there is also a 3/0, 22g jig head which now takes this little lure to 29g. It flies.
The 14cm (11cm Tail) Sandeel V2 (J-hook) is sold pre-rigged with a 4/0, 23g jig head, for a total weight of 33g - but there is also a 4/0, 30g jig head which takes this new size of Sandeel to 40g. It flies.
The 15.5cm (12.5cm Tail) Sandeel V2 (J-hook) is sold pre-rigged with a 5/0, 31g jig head, for a total weight of 46g - but there is also a 5/0, 42g jig head which takes this lure up to 57g.
The 17.5cm (14cm Tail) Sandeel V2 (J-hook) is sold pre-rigged with a 6/0, 43g jig head for a total weight of 65g - but there is also a 6/0, 63g jig head which takes this large lure up to 86g.
Hope this helps!
