Good riddance to March, but the good news is that Marc Cowling’s new book is now available

At least around February half-term you start to get a distinct sense that spring is on the way with lighter mornings and afternoons, various flowers beginning to appear again, and a lot more birdsong. March though? March can do one in my book, indeed it seems pretty indicative of this crap month that we are currently being blasted with storm force winds and torrential rain on the last day of the (crappy) month………….

Roll on April in my book. I have no idea if the bass fishing around here is going to kick off when it often tends to do - going on the tides I’d fancy the next set of springs - but I do know that as we move into April I feel 100% better about getting out fishing and feeling like I have a genuine chance again. I am really happy to have broken my March duck this year, but one single modest bass isn’t going to sustain an angler for a huge amount of time!

I did come up with what I was hoping might be a bit of a cunning plan for another March bass yesterday, and it also tied in with doing a bit of a lure rod swap with Ben Field of the Art of Fishing tackle shop in Wadebridge, north Cornwall. It was time to return that outrageously good APIA Vivogue (review here, I hated saying goodbye to this rod) plus a shorter, more powerful Tailwalk Crimson rod which I will review in due course, but I did get to grab the shorter APIA Foojin’RS Springer 88ML 3-32g for a proper thrashing around here (when the bloody weather calms down!). I always keep my eyes and ears open for the sort of lure rod which sounds like it might thrive on the more subtle side of bass fishing - some of the estuary stuff, calmer open coast conditions at night, first light etc. I am looking forward to putting this Springer through its paces.

Anyway, my cunning plan for yesterday was about as cunning as trying to fly fish for bass into the teeth of the winds which are currently raging outside. At least we were fishing when we stood absolutely zero chance around where I live, but we did not exactly cover ourselves in bass related glory. April can’t come soon enough and March can sod right off.

I wanted to draw your attention to the fact that you can now buy Marc Cowling’s new bass fishing book - check his blog post here for all the details, then scroll to the bottom for a PayPal link to purchase. I will review this book here most likely next week, but I can save you the time if you would like and reiterate that “Bass Lure Fishing – A Guide’s Perspective (Volume 2)” is essential fishing related reading for anybody who has any interest in improving their own fishing. Even if only 10% of Marc’s new book resonates with you and the fishing you do then it’s worth every single cent, but if you have an open mind and you like reading then there are quite literally golden nuggets of information on almost every single page of the book. I have read it cover to cover once already, but I need to go through it all again to make sure I pick up on all the good stuff and don’t miss anything. Huge respect to Marc Cowling of South Devon Bass Guide. I am not aware of anybody who is writing about modern lure fishing for bass like Marc does. You all have a good weekend and I sincerely hope that you all find a few hungry bass sometime soon……………..
