Good few days on the bass, it’s almost silly how often the Savage Gear Sandeel Pencil sorts the fish out
One of the lads in our second group had never caught a bass from the shore before, but on the first morning of his trip with us he went and landed this stunner below - and then he caught a whole heap more. All on the Savage Gear Sandeel Pencil 125. I changed another of our lads over to the cotton candy Sandeel Pencil 125 on the first morning and he literally landed bass after bass and it such fun to watch and then help grab and unhook the fish……………
We found calmer conditions than we hoped to find yesterday morning, but we have got so much ground out here to go looking for fish. Eventually we found the bass by literally following the warmer water over some shallow ground, and the lads started off catching them as far as they could put the Sandeel Pencil 90 and 125 lures out. As we moved into even shallower water and rougher ground though, it was time for the soft plastics to come out and the classic white OSP DoLive Stick did the harm. For a good while the fishing got pretty hectic on the first two days with our second group, and I’ll take that with the weather conditions we are getting and how it’s been for most of the year so far - bloody cold!
You know that I work with Savage Gear/Pure Fishing, but I make no apologies for banging on about specific lures which work for us out here. I’m going to tell you about the gear that works for us regardless of who makes it (white DoLive Stick hammering fish yesterday afternoon as I said above), but John and I were talking about the Sandeel Pencil yesterday and how often we turn to it. Our job out here revolves around trying to find bass for our anglers to catch, so we’re going to use the gear we trust to help us achieve our goal. I have said before that I have no access to Savage Gear sales figures, but I have always wondered how well or not the Sandeel Pencil sells.
It has always struck me as a somewhat misunderstood lure because when you straight-retrieve it you can’t exactly feel very much going on at the business end - and I think this freaks some anglers out who are more used to hard lures jangling away or paddletails thumping. I choose to see the Sandeel Pencil as a long-range soft plastic - casts a mile, swims really shallow on a simple straight-retrieve, it looks a lot like a sandeel (really?!), and the action on it is lovely and subtle and appeals big time to the bass. We wouldn’t be without the lures out here and they keep on catching fish for our anglers…………
