Fishing like this makes me so happy!
A couple of days ago I had a bit of a juggling act. My mate Del was due to arrive from the Isles of Scilly to stay for a few days with us here at home, then at 5.40pm I had to be in front of the TV for the England v Fuji rugby. Del’s train was due in at 11.30, low water was at 1pm, so I had to do a bit of computing in my head and come up with a logical fishing spot to allow for getting back from the station, a quick bite of early lunch, then the very last of the ebb tide and the first of the flood…………..
With steam coming out of my ears I came up with what I hoped was a good solution. Del’s train was on time, so we got back home, wolfed some food down while saying hi to my lot, then we got into our waders, jumped in my Epic Berlingo, and off we went. Rods were already rigged up and I changed the handle over on one of the reels because Del fishes cack-handed. He lives on the stunning Isles of Scilly where they don’t have any bass fishing, so I had told him not to worry about lures and so on because I’ve got it all here.
I rigged us both up with what is becoming my go-to approach for estuary ground where you are working a bit of current for bass - a 7g Berkley Fusion cheb weight (weight to change according to depth and flow of course), an Eagle Claw Lazer Sharp L12 Weedless hook with keeper in size 3/0 to allow for the lure, and a Savage Gear Ned Dragontail Slug 10cm lure for both of us.
Had I made a decent call though? I explained to Del about the ground and how we might approach it, and about ten minutes later I got one of those utterly delightful hard taps which literally sings its way down the rod and into your hands. I shouted over to Del that I was into a bass, and literally as I did he struck into a bass himself and came up with the fish you can see here. Made my day? Made the month for me more like. I do love it when fishing works like this. What an evening of rugby as well…………….
