A while back I wouldn’t have thought about looking for bass where I did this morning, plus 10% off everything at Veals Mail Order this Bank Holiday weekend

Can you have such a thing as a fascinating blank? I had no intention of going fishing this morning with work I need to clear plus getting my life organised to fly to France on Sunday to see my eldest daughter for a few days down near the Spanish border in the south west - but itches need scratching. One of the heart pills I am on makes me dream for what feels like all night, every night, so I don’t know if I dreamt about my cunning plan for a quick fishing session this morning…………….

But it was so cunning I was giving myself a pat on the back as I drove away from home early this morning. Those howling east winds had eased off overnight and I could have gone to a number of different spots to try for a bass - but the way my head works is that I really do enjoy getting out of my comfort zone and learning as much as possible. I accept that bass might show a marked preference at times for certain lures or types of lures presented in certain ways, but for the most part I feel very confident now that some sort of creature bait soft plastic presented properly in the right sort of area at least gives me a good chance of one important variable being in my favour.

The one thing I have learnt over the years is that there is almost nowhere you can’t go looking for bass, but even so I did a bit of a double take when I knelt down nice and quietly after a good long walk. I am pretty sure I haven’t been quite this far up an estuary for a start, and I know it’s not that long ago that the idea of presenting a lure in the sort of tiny little channel I had found on a scouting mission would have seemed daft. So I got down to my knees, rigged up with one of these new, smaller 2.4inch versions of the Nikko Craw creature bait which rather handily sits perfectly on one of those 1/0 5g Seadra weedless jig heads I have here (I just fancied a smaller lure for a smaller bit of water, is there any logic to that?), and just as I was about to underhand the lure out I saw a bass of easily 4lb+ move in front of me.

Bloody hell! Cue a bit of shaking with excitement, and as gently as I could I underhanded the lure out, let it hit the bottom - very shallow water - and started to bump it back towards me. All of a sudden I got a sharp tap then felt the lure being lifted up, but a split-second later the bass dropped it. I have no idea if the bass which picked the smaller Nikko Craw up was the same bass I had just seen, but here I was, fishing a “strange” bit of water in the middle of the boonies to scratch an itch, and I’d been hit straight away. Cue all sorts of thoughts of a bumper session, but sod’s law gave me no more hits at all. The water didn’t hang around for very long but I did see a couple of bass backs coming out of the water on the hunt for something. I am taking that as a fascinating blank……...

Because I am a soppy tart I went and ordered a spool of the PE#0.8/16.7lb Varivas Avani Sea Bass Max Power X8 braid to put on this first generation Shimano Vanford C3000 spinning reel which I find pretty much perfect for this lighter style of bass fishing. This Varivas Avani Sea Bass Max Power X8 is not a cheap braid at all, but I wanted a really good lighter/thinner braid, it’s such a good mainline, and 10% off makes me feel a bit better about my weakness! You all have a good weekend, I will be in France for most of next week so I am not sure how much I will be able to blog……………
