Favorite Black Swan 852MH 8'5'' 10-36g
Gotta be close to the ultimate lure rod for these weights of lures that we can currently get our hands on. This Favorite Black Swan 852MH 8'5'' 10-36g lure rod is the very definition of responsive and wand-like. Fast and very light, I don’t know what Favorite have done with these new Black Swan rods because they are truly something else. A rod like this has no right to be well under £300. Awesome. Favorite Black Swan 852M 8'5'' 6-24g
At 97g I believe this Favorite Black Swan 852M 8'5'' 6-24g lure rod is the lightest lure rod I have fished with so far. What the (lack of) weight doesn’t tell you is how accomplished this rod is - if you need to go a bit lighter with your lure fishing then I can’t really see how you can get better than this wand. Deft of touch but with loads of power, wow is this lure rod so far up my street I find myself literally stroking it! I have no idea how a lure rod can be this good for a good deal under £300. APIA Foojin'RS Art Magic 90ML+ (UK Custom) 9' 5-36g
Damn APIA make some good fishing rods, and this new APIA Foojin'RS Art Magic 90ML+ (UK Custom) 9' 5-36g lure rod is another one. Designed to perfectly deal with so many of the different lures and lure fishing situations we might face when we are out bass fishing, this stunning fishing rod is a peach. APIA Foojin'Z Testamatta 88MH 8'8'' 8-56g
Hideously expensive but ridiculously good, this APIA Foojin'Z Testamatta 88MH 8'8'' 8-56g is at least two and quite possibly three lure rods in one with how versatile and easy it is to fish with. It’s incredible how smooth and accessible a 8-56g rod can be, and APIA have done something seriously special with this one. So special in fact that I could resist no more and I now own one. APIA Foojin’RS Desire 95MH 9’5’’ 12-50g
This rod has no right being so subtle and easy to fish with, but this stunning APIA Foojin’RS Desire 95MH 9’5’’ 12-50g is quite something. Well able to dial up the power for your conditions, but just as able to tone things down with smaller lures and quieter seas, for sure this rod is not cheap - it’s literally two rods in one though. Absolutely staggering, but in the past I’d have walked away from a lure rod like this APIA Foojin’RS Vivogue 96ML+ 9’6’’ 6-38g. A 28g finesse rod masquerading as a 38g weapon, the tip on this thing is something else. Utterly effortless, loads of power in the butt which moves into a forgiving and very precise tip which in some ways belies how versatile this amazing rod really is. I cannot get enough of this thing. A gun of a lure rod, this APIA Foojin’RS Sky High 99M 9’9’’ 8-42g isn’t even trying at 42g, yet it still retains so much subtlety. Puts literally any kind of lure out an absolute mile, if you like a bit of a longer rod which feels like a 9’6’’ then this thing could do everything lure fishing for bass related for a lot of anglers. A seriously capable and easy to fish with lure rod which is almost two rods in one to me. This stunning APIA Foojin’RS Springer 88ML 3-32g works really well when used as a lighter rod say for estuary fishing, but then you step things up a bit out on the coast and it can bang and fish a Patchinko 140 surface lure with consummate ease. Tailwalk Crimson S88H-F 8’8’’ Max 50g
If you ever had a hankering for the very expensive and almost impossible to get hold of Shimano Genos 9’ 48g rod then go for this amazing Tailwalk Crimson S88H-F 8’8’’ Max 50g lure rod. Easier to fish with than the Genos, but still with a really good tip on it which works pretty well with lighter lures. Wow you can feel that power coming in through the butt and mid sections when you start winding up the heavier lures, but it doesn’t demand that every single cast is perfect like the Genos does. Incredibly versatile, I could do the bulk of my shore based lure fishing for bass with a lure rod like this. Review here.

HTO N70 Labrax Special N7094ML 9’4’’ 7-42g
A high-end cracker of a lure rod which I think is somewhat unique with how precise and light it feels, yet this HTO N70 Labrax Special N7094ML 9’4’’ 7-42g can effortlessly hurl 40g lures if needs be. Genuinely as good with the lighter lures as with the heavier stuff, and that’s rare. Review here.

If I had around £400 to drop on a travel lure rod then this 4-piece HTO N70 Labrax Special Travel 9’4’’ 7-42g would be the one for me. Absolutely stunning, easily as good as the 2-piece version, although annoyingly this 4-piece doesn’t come with a travel-ready rod tube, but because it’s so good I can forgive this oversight.
